Wonderful book- great story where we can see into the lives of several southern women, all flawed, all real. What an amazing piece of work– character study as well as history lesson.

I got my Kindle a year and a half ago, as one of the best birthday presents I’ve received. I had wanted an ereader for years, and finally got the chance when my partner and friends chipped in for an Amazon gift certificate so I could buy one. I had been researching ereaders, and had four criteria:

One, that it would have a good selection of books available for purchase.

Two, that it would be compatible with a New York Times subscription.

Three, that it would be compatible with downloaded ebooks from the library.

And four, that there would be an app for Android phones.

At the time, there was no e-reader that met all of those criteria. The Sony Reader didn’t have as good a selection of books, and at the time, you couldn’t get a New York Times subscription on it. The Kindle isn’t compatible with library books. And none of the ereaders at the time had an app for Android phones. I chose the Kindle, because Amazon has the biggest ebookstore, and because it would let me get my newspaper on the reader, rather than having stacks of paper pile up.

I love the Kindle. I’m an avid reader, but I’ve got a couple of disabilities that were making holding books into a thoroughly miserable experience. Having an ereader meant that I could once again read for hours without having to give up because my hands hurt too much! It’s a delight.

But, as an avid reader, I was starting to realize that the cost of buying books (often re-buying books that I already owned in physical book form) was getting out of hand. I needed a way to make use of the free new books I could download from the library. (I believe in copyrights, and so I choose not to get bootleg copies of books.) So, as much as I love my Kindle, I finally decided that I needed a nook. It took me months to convince my partner that there was a good reason to have *both* a Kindle and a nook. If you want to really keep track of what you walk during the day, I would highly recommend this pedometer. I got it on a whim just to see how far I walked during the day just at home. It has forced me to do a little more and more everyday as far as aerobic exercise.

For a long time I had a mechanical doctor scale, the type commonly seen in clinics or hospitals over the past two decades, with sliding weights and a height rod. It always felt good knowing I was getting an accurate weight measurement on those scales. But due to a move in which I didn’t have the capability of transporting them, I gave them to a family member. I’ve regretted not having those scales ever since. But no more. Now that I have this extremely affordable EatSmart scale, I can once again know my weight with great accuracy, and, I may say, with much more ease and a smaller footprint. I read all the reviews before buying, and I certainly feel the upgrade to 400 lb weight limit (vs 300 lb) and not needing to tap the scales on anymore are excellent improvements. I couldn’t be more pleased.

I am the wife and I couldn’t be happier with this item. Assemblage was easy. The ease of cleaning and cleanup are very simple but the results are what matter. The results were fantastic. We had our carpet installed 8 years ago and this was the first cleaning. We also have 3 cats and a Chihuahua indoors. The knap was restored to the carpet. Stains gone. The house smells clean and fresh. The results were instantly visible as a result this was an extremely satisfying experience. Who needs a man when one has a Hoover steamVac. Enjoy!

Excellent read, bought the book based on a recommendation, and I was not disappointed. Beautifully written story that gives you a real feeling of what the south was like in that era. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I regret buying this foolish novel of Black maids. The author may have capture a place in time, but the voice of her maids was not there. It was not an authentic read, what was she really trying to do? Cover and explain away her own guilt? As for her maids,what individual suffering from 300 years of horrific abuse and servitude can so easily be persuaded by a 22 year old to place themselves and their families in danger.
The author only “stero typed” those characters tht were comfortable for her- say the abusive black male,drunking, wife beater. She made sure she had a Mammy, a benevolent White woman, The Sassy No Nonse Black Female. The white trash that did not know she was better than the nigras…please. In fact she was the best…sterotype in the work.
Interestlying, she did not mention the white male “hots” for the Black female “seductress.” What happen to all the rapes that many of the maids her subject too,or the “fair babies borned” as a result of these assults. I am Black and it grieves me to read a significant part of black life being marginalized,miminized and partonized by a self serving individual who has no idea of the black psyche.

I have heard maid stories all my life, my mother, aunts, cousins and extended family…
The author fails to understand that this was survival, the only means for many to feed their families. Good women that only wanted to be safe. These women spoke among themselves about the “folks” they took care of. Maid stories are paramount in black literature/history. They were not all that in love, and devoted to White Folks. It was their job. A job that they did too well!

The books seems to have some kind of redemption for the author and all the “good white women”, “who just did’nt know, didn’t see” but now they see and “its all good.”

The story reminds us of the cruelity felt by black women/children by the mistress of the house. Often times more cruel than their conterparts the white male.

Easy to set up. Network connection was easy.
The Remotes and Nunchucks are a bit spendy when you have to buy three more of each. The Wii usually only comes with one set. Altho, you can hold off on the Nunchucks as there aren’t very many multipayer games where you can use three or more people that need the Nunchucks. Usually just two people need it. And then you’ll have to buy the Game Pad to play the older games if you are used to using it. But then some of the Wii’s are now coming with the rubber “protectors” already on the Remotes so that’s great.

A blast when playing with more then one person on some of the games. We haven’t really bought many games for it as the grand kids are just getting to the point of being able to play now. The attention span just isn’t there yet. The games we do have are great to play.
