Does what it says but not the best design. Yes, the product performs as advertised — it’ll display the amount of energy consumed in KW/hour, watts, volts, and amps. It just doesn’t have a very thoughtful design. Some comments:
1. As depicted in another reviewer’s photo, the unit is bulky and the top extends a bit high over the prongs — as such, it monopolizes an entire standard dual outlet requiring the user to unplug something else (probably the lamp required to see the LCD screen).
2. The LCD screen is not backlit so crouching behind a dark appliance to get a reading is a hassle.
3. It’d be nice if the unit had supplemental battery power to save the readout until you plugged it into something else (even better would be some memory to store multiple readings). The device is passive so once you unplug a device from it, the information is lost.
4. It doesn’t compute KW/hour immediately. This is a fairly simple calculation for a device like this to compute on the fly.
At a list price of $35, it should have at least some of the features listed above. As it stands, this is a primitive device in “attractive” plastic cladding.
Did what I expected. I had read some of the reviews on this product before purchasing it, so I knew some of the drawbacks (no backlighting, no power cord, etc.) These I could remedy with a short (or long) extension cord. My primary purpose for this product was to determine how hefty a backup generator I needed to power some essential appliances. It would be nice to have a peak reading, such as the peak power consumption when a motor starts up. The sample period seems to be in the neighborhood of one second, and it appears that the power usage is averaged during each sample period.
Very useful device.. The Kill-A-Watt device is a very useful and inexpensive instrument. I was most impressed with the instruments ability to indicate the power factor for inductive and capacitive loads. This is a feature most often found in relatively very expensive power meters. My own testing indicates that the instrument is very accurate; even when monitoring very reactive loads (p.f.< 0.3). The device is well worth the money. The only downside I've found, is that the Kw-hr integrator, along with the internal timer, does reset to zero if the power goes out for just a few seconds or more (there is no internal battery); resulting in a loss of data.
Use Kill-a-Watt to fine-tune your RV solar system. P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage MonitorMy husband loves this tool, wishes he’d known about it earlier. Says it works great. He uses it in our bus conversion RV to run the electricity efficiently in the solar panel-battery-inverter system. For TVs, fans, microwave ovens, all those gadgets , this meter will tell you the wattage and amperage used, so you can determine how many solar panels, batteries, and what size inverter you’ll need.
Excellent Purchase. I bought the Kill-a -watt hoping to tell me if some of my older appliances were responsable for my high electric bill and was very happy to find out that a recent aquisition of a comercial refrigerator was responsable for 1/3 of my bill. So the Kill-a-watt paid for it’s self in it’s first use.
